A Message from Minnesota Opera’s Board Chair, Mark Gordon

I am delighted to welcome you to the first opera of our 61st Minnesota Opera season.

We are very fortunate to present Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first Mariachi opera, which tells an important story about family, life, and society in a manner that combines both the Mariachi tradition and more traditional elements of opera.  This distinctive blend of musical genres provides the foundation for an opera which, like many great operas over the centuries, engages both our minds and our hearts while telling a story that is both uniquely personal and also timely and relevant in a broader social context.

Our presentation of Cruzar is an integral part of our MN Opera vision to “Sing Every Story.”  And that is precisely what this 61st season offers, as we move from Cruzar (by composer José “Pepe” Martínez) to Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, a double bill of Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti and Christopher Weiss and John de los Santos’ Service Provider, and then Puccini’s always engaging and delightful La bohème.  What an exciting mixture of the old and the new!

We at MN Opera are justifiably proud of the consistently high quality of our productions and performances.  While those on stage are front and center as we enjoy the performance, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those in the orchestra pit, behind the scenes, and in the opera administrative offices who work tirelessly throughout the season to achieve the level of excellence that we have all come to expect and enjoy from a Minnesota Opera production.  I hope you will join me in thanking them (together with the on-stage performers) all for their hard work in bringing this season to fruition!

Thank you for joining us at this performance.  We look forward to seeing you at many more to come!

Mark C. Gordon
