Michelle Hayes, Soprano, has been a member of the Minnesota Opera Chorus since 1993 where she made her opera debut in Armida. Since that time, she has been seen on stage, each season, including innovative productions such as The Grapes of Wrath, Elephant Man, Handmaid’s Tale, as well as many of the standard opera repertoire such as La Traviata, Carmen and Turandot. Ms. Hayes has had the privilege of performing on stage with her former student Ellie Dehn as Mimi in La Boheme, as well as with both of her daughters as a result of their participation in Project Opera. Michelle has held the position of Soprano Section Leader with the Minnesota Chorale, the official chorus of the Minnesota Orchestra, since 1992.  Ms. Hayes has served as a freelance artist over the years appearing with many local organizations including The Northern Symphony Orchestra, where she was the soprano soloist for Gorecki’s Symphony No.2,  Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate amongst others.

In the Fall of 1991, Michelle Hayes came to Anoka High School and currently serves as Vocal Music Director, teaching all of the choirs as well as The Seventh Avenue Singers, Premiere, and a variety of small ensembles and quartets that perform regularly in the Twin Cities Metro Area. In addition, she holds the role of Music Director for the school’s Musical Theatre Program which produces 2-3 musicals each year. Ms. Hayes serves as Department Leader for the Music Department and has maintained a private voice studio, on and off, since the fall of 1990.

Choirs under Ms. Hayes’ direction have appeared at State and Regional Conventions, been selected as the solo guest choir for many honor events including the Luther College Dorian Festival, the National Peace Prize Forum at Concordia College, and the Choral Arts Finale. Her choirs have performed on the stages of Orchestra Hall and the Ordway Music Theatre, as well as on National Public Radio as part of “A Prairie Home Companion” live radio show with Garrison Geillor. Her Concert Choir was chosen to be a part of the yearlong composer-in-residency Cantaré program with VocalEssence intended to build bridges between the United States and Mexico, teaching culture through the art of choral music. As a result, her choir has developed a wonderful musical relationship and friendship with the internationally known a cappella ensemble Voz en Punto, and their director José Galván. Her students are consistently selected as members of Honor and All-State Choirs, and many go on to study music in college. Ms. Hayes is the co-producer of the wildly popular Symphonic Rock concerts, held over many years at Anoka High School, playing to over 20,000 people and raising over $240,000.00 to directly serve students and families in need at Anoka High School. Ms. Hayes is honored to be able to provide continuous meaningful experiences for her students at Anoka High School and is most looking forward to a performance tour to England this coming March with the opportunity to sing their first Evensong at the famous Ripon Cathedral.
