“Jennifer Eckes has such a strong, lovely voice that I began wishing Sondheim had come up with an extra song for her to tackle.” – Pioneer Press, review of Sunday in the Park with George at Bloomington Civic Theatre
Jennifer has been singing and performing professionally in the Twin Cities area for over two decades. She has been in over 25 productions with the Minnesota Opera’s chorus, including the world premieres of The Grapes of Wrath and The Shining. In the musical theater and light opera realm, she has sung with numerous local companies such as Ordway Center, Plymouth Playhouse, Artistry Theater, Skylark Opera, Mill City Summer Opera, the Minnesota Orchestra, and many others.
In the past year, Eckes was seen in Skylark’s edgy comeback production of The Tragedy of Carmen as Lillas Pastia. At Artistry Theater, she portrayed the ghostly Lily Craven in The Secret Garden, and was most recently seen as Marian (the Librarian) Paroo in their acclaimed, sold-out run of The Music Man. The Twin Cities Arts Reader noted her “engaging gift for song” as Marian, and Minnesota Playlist called it a “knock-out performance.” Coming up in 2018, Eckes will sing in Mn Opera’s Thaïs.
As a soloist, she has found many musical revues, concerts and cabaret opportunities throughout the region. Her voice has been called "crystalline", "rock solid", and “easy to listen to” by reviewers, often praised for her warm stage presence. Upcoming 2018 cabaret concerts include “Days of Wine and Roses” at Hastings Arts Center, and “BingSongs!” at the Bloomington Center for the Arts.
Jennifer holds a B.A. in vocal performance from Luther College and has twice been a fellow of the former Cabaret Conference at Yale University, where she found her passion for cabaret performance. Eckes is a founder and active member of the Twin Cities Cabaret Artists Network (TCCAN), and she particularly loves telling the story within a well-written song, using humor and honesty to touch the audience on a personal level.
