Il trovatore - Verdi
Verdi's thriller combusts with fiery melodrama and unforgettable music, including the Anvil Chorus. A gypsy, mad with fury, kills her own son by mistake instead of her enemy's. Remorseful, she raises his child as her own, until destinies and quests for revenge collide. This Minnesota Opera production of Il trovatore (The Troubadour), not seen here since 1994, is set in high Renaissance Spain and directed by Kevin Newbury.
September 20, 23, 25, 27 and 28, 2008
The Abduction from the Seraglio - Mozart
Hilarious hijinx are all aboard the Orient Express in a James Robinson staging called "a winner" by The Washington Post. Belmonte and his servant Pedrillo set out to rescue their lovers, Konstanze and Blonde, who are held hostage on a train bound from Istanbul to Paris. Mozart's comic genius shines throughout this vaudeville from the Age of the Enlightenment, last seen on The Minnesota Opera stage in 1979. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Altenbach, joins The Minnesota Opera for this glamorous ride.
November 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9, 2008
Faust - Gounod
The aging Dr. Faust makes a deal with the devil to regain his youth and win the young Marguerite. Based on the Goethe classic, this tale of good and evil brims with Gounod's unforgettable melodies and opera's favorite villain. This new Doug Varone production is the first Minnesota Opera staging of Faust in a decade.

The Adventures of Pinocchio - Dove
This fantastical tale brings to life the wooden boy who wants to be good, but just can't stay out of trouble. Guided by the Blue Fairy, Pinocchio has lots to learn before he can discover the secret to becoming a real boy. Along the way he is tricked by the Fox and the Cat, squishes the well-meaning Cricket, has his lying nose pecked by woodpeckers, is captured in the Big Green Fisherman's net and is even turned into a performing donkey at a circus. Jonathan Dove's exhilarating music is paired with magical stagecraft and storybook scenery. This family opera is an American premiere, suitable for children who aren't afraid of the dark. **By Ordway Center policy, children under the age of six are not permitted in the theater for Minnesota Opera performances.**
February 28, March 3, 5, 7 and 8, 2009
The Barber of Seville - Rossini
Figaro, the clever barber of Seville, helps Count Almaviva win Rosina from the snatches of her wily old guardian. Pure joy and silliness abound in this riotous Rossini romp. The Minnesota Opera's wildly popular production is re-imagined by director Kevin Newbury for its final revival. Barber is the perfect opera for first-time opera-goers.
